History

A kindly fellow by the name of Vicks was browsing my site and noticed both the Rainbow Ion Pack and the Smooth Ion Beams. Suddenly, a great idea thrust itself upon his consciousness: if these two effects could be combined, space combat would be forever changed! Ok, I'm making up the details, but he did request I combine the effects, which I have done in a marathon copy/paste session.

UPDATE! I re-did the Smooth Rainbow Ion Beams for Cataclysm. The instructions for Cataclysm are similar to Homeworld, but you must include a LoadEffect line for each file.

Instructions

Unzip smoothrainbow.zip into your Homeworld directory. Unzip this into your Homeworld directory. The fireEvents and hitEvents are the same as in the Rainbow Ion Pack, only the bulletEffects have been changed. The new bullet files starr with bulletSm, to distinguish them from the original Rainbow Ion files. Open homeworld\etg\r1.script or homeworld\etg\r2.script Find a weapon slot you like and replace its chunk o' text with a color you like. Here's an example that sets Kushan LargeIonCannons to Yellow. Use search-replace (carefully!) to change the slot, race, and/or color.

setFireEvent R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,fireIonYellow.ebg
setFireEvent R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,fireIonYellow.ebg
setFireEvent R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,fireIonYellow.ebg
setFireEvent R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,fireIonYellow.ebg
setBulletEffect R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,bulletSmIonYellow.ebg
setBulletEffect R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,bulletSmIonYellow.ebg
setBulletEffect R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,bulletSmIonYellow.ebg
setBulletEffect R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,bulletSmIonYellow.ebg
setHitEvent R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,hitIonYellow.ebg
setHitEvent R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,hitIonYellow.ebg
setHitEvent R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,hitIonYellow.ebg
setHitEvent R1,GS_LargeIonCannon,hitIonYellow.ebg

Here's a list of all 14 sets of EBGs (fire*, hit*, and bulletSm*) and the approximate RGB value of the beams they create. If you're really cool, you can go down to the bottom of whatever script file you just modified, to the [color of bullets] section and change those lines to reflect the newly-recolored ion beams you just installed. If there isn't a setBulletColor line for the weapon slot you changed, you can make one, just be sure to spell everything correctly.

ionrandom.ebg randomly selects one of the 12 colors above.
ionrainbow.ebg cycles through the 12 colors above.

rainbow and random do not have fire or hit events, so if you want to use them, only replace the setBulletEffect lines.
