History
First, there was Wolfenstein. Then Doom, then Quake, then Quake 2, then Quake 3, and now Homeworld. Makes sense so far, right? Well try this: This gun looks like a beam weapon, and should have type Bullet_beam, but other than that it's a projectile weapon. Nifty, huh? The effect is pretty sweet if I do say so myself, but you'll have to edit a SHP file for it to work completely.
Instructions
Unzip q3railgun.zip into your Homeworld directory. Pick a weapon slot, say, VeryLargeEnergyCannon. Open the script file of your choice, maybe etg\r2.script, and replace your weapon's text with the paragraphs below.
setFireEvent R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,FireQ3Railgun.ebg setFireEvent R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,FireQ3Railgun.ebg setFireEvent R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,FireQ3Railgun.ebg setFireEvent R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,FireQ3Railgun.ebg setBulletEffect R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,BulletQ3RailgunSpawn.ebg setBulletEffect R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,BulletQ3RailgunSpawn.ebg setBulletEffect R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,BulletQ3RailgunSpawn.ebg setBulletEffect R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,BulletQ3RailgunSpawn.ebg setHitEvent R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,HitQ3Railgun.ebg setHitEvent R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,HitQ3Railgun.ebg setHitEvent R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,HitQ3Railgun.ebg setHitEvent R2,GS_VeryLargeIonCannon,HitQ3Railgun.ebg
Now scroll to the bottom ofthe file and slap this into the [EFFECTS LOADING] section:
LoadEffect bulletQ3Railgun.ebg
Now for the SHP file part. Pick your favorite ship and get its SHP file. (Hopefully this ship belongs to the race whose script file you just edited.) If it has beam weapons, great. If not, you'll need to get a beam weapon entry. ioncannonfrigate.shp is a good place to look. Adjust the bulletRange, and FireTime to anything your heart desires. Set the BulletLength equal to the bulletRange, and set the BulletLifeTime to 0.1. The DamageHi and DamageLo can also be anything you want, but those values will be how much the gun does each shot, instead of being applied continuously. OK, beam weapon damage is actually applied discretely but very quickly, and this damage is applied discretely, quickly, and over a very short time, so if this confuses you, just ignore it. The damage works like the damage for a bullet-type weapon. Well, that should give you a Quake 3 style railgun on your ship of choice.
