Homeworld Effects Manual: setDrag()

setDrag(float value)

Legal values: non-negative real numbers

Default value: 0

Slows down objects over time.

I hear the hard science fiction people cying already, "There's no drag in space! Space is a vacuum!" Well, seeing debris stay with the ship may have been cool in Apollo 13, but not in Homeworld. Only a tiny bit of drag is necessary to slow objects quickly. Anything over 0.1 is overkill.

Drag is used is deathEvents to make trails of smoke and fire. I used Drag in a gravwell effect to create smoke that would billow around the gravwell when it was still, but trail behind when it moved. The smoke particles had a short Lifespan, and I realized that by adjusting the Drag, I could control how long the smoke trail got before it dissapated. Higher values make the trail longer, while small values let the smoke keep up with the ship better.
