Homeworld Effects Manual: setDepthWrite()
setDepthWrite(int flag)
Determines whether faces are drawn using a z-buffer.
Legal values: integers
Default value: 0
If flag is 0, this is inactive, and it is active otherwise.
The z-buffer is used to make sure that polygons further from the camera are not drawn in front of polygons that are closer. With opaque objects, there is no reason to disable this feature, but if your effect uses semi-transparent meshes along with other objects, it may be helpful to disable DepthWrite. Sometimes a nearly transparent mesh will 'obscure' another partially transparent object. With DepthWrite active, the further object is not frawn behind the near mesh, so empty space can be seen behind the near mesh. That is definitely not what should happen if two transparent objects overlap.
setDepthWrite(0) with an opaque Enterprise-D is disasterous.
setDepthWrite(1) makes a transparent Enterprise-D erroneously obscure the green glow behind it.
setDepthWrite(0) lets the transparent Enterprise-D show the green glow behind it properly.
