History
This is one of the coolest guns ever made. It had to go in Homeworld. For how messed up the effect is, it still looks surprisingly good. The beams that go from the wingtips to the nose are missing. The effect don't 'charge up' and then fire, the beam comes out immediately as the muzzle flash intensifies, and the Excalibur can still move after firing, instead of drifting for a minute.
Babylon 5: Conflict of Interest has an Excalibur, and the old version didn't fit their new mesh. I fiddled with some constants to make it fit, and realized that the effect was terrible! I'm not sure how I got away with it in the first place. I had to make it better. So I did. The screenshots don't look all that different from the old ones, but in motion the effect is much better. It's amazing what an modicum of elegance will get you.
Instructions
If you selected the effect that fits the B5:COI mesh, I recommend downloading the B5:COI Excalibur from their site, since it will fit nicely. Once you get it working (you'll get no help from me, it's not mine), unzip excalcoi.zip into your homeworld directory.
If you wanted the version that fits Lt. Jim's mesh, you're in luck, because his ship has been provided in place of the Kushan Destroyer. Unzipping maingun2.zip into your homeworld directory will install the Excalibur over whatever else might be in the r1standarddestroyer slot, and install the files for the effect itself.
In either case, Replace the SmallIonCannon section of r1.script with this paragraph:
setFireEvent R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,fireMainGun.ebg setFireEvent R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,fireMainGun.ebg setFireEvent R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,fireMainGun.ebg setFireEvent R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,fireMainGun.ebg setFireEvent R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,fireMainGun.ebg setBulletEffect R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,bulletMainGun.ebg setBulletEffect R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,bulletMainGun.ebg setBulletEffect R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,bulletMainGun.ebg setBulletEffect R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,bulletMainGun.ebg setBulletEffect R1,GS_SmallIonCannon,bulletMainGun.ebg
Then scroll down to the very bottom of the file, under [EFFECTS LOADING] and add this line:
LoadEffect firemaingunglows.ebg
