Peregrine Class

Starfleet has traditionally favoured the use of larger vessels over small fighter craft, however the Dominion war convinced them to rethink their strategies.

The Peregrine is based on a fairly old design, and was mainly used as a sub-orbital transport and a flight training vessel at Starfleet Academy.

Following the loss of the USS Odyssey it was discovered that existing starships were extremely vulnerable to swarms of fast moving, small attack ships.
To this end, the Peregrine class was redesigned with upgraded engines and weapons systems.

Thousands of these fighters had been produced by the end of the Dominion War, most were stationed as part of planetary defence fleets however many were also
assigned to individual starships as escorts.

Although the official designation is Peregrine class, many crews have started to refer to these vessels as Tac-Fighters.
