Defiant Class

Following the massive losses sustained at Wolf 359, StarFleet command saw the need for a new class of starship which was capable of holding its own against enemies like the Borg.

Preliminary plans for the vessel existed a year before the Borg invasion, however in its wake the decision was taken to transfer resources to this project. Under the supervision of Commander Sisko the first prototype, the USS Defiant, was build and underwent preliminary trials.

Full-scale production of the Defiant Class did not begin until the onset of the Dominion War when the need for a more powerful ship was realised.
