This picture started out as a doodle in the margin of a math worksheet. I liked the concept enough to make it a full-blown sketch. I wanted to capture one of the calm moments of war that reinforces the sense of loss felt by those involved. The PADD on the Admiral's desk has a list of casualties from his battle group (the Fourth Fleet). The phaser rifle on the wall next to his bed demonstrates the constant necessity for diligence that these officers had to have.

This is a sketch of President Inyo, during his speech to the Federation that formally declared the Dominion War. There is an excerpt of that speech, or at least a speech concerning the Dominion conflict, in the DS9 Technical Manual:

"The fact that the Federation has not fallen totally into the hands of its enemies is attributable soley to the vigilance and resourcefulnees of its people, the stalwart and selfless defenders of our member worlds and outposts. Never before in the history of interstellar civilization have we witnessed galactic turmoil on the present scale. The struggles we are enduring are irrefutable evidence of that. Whether or not Starfleet and the UFP can continue to make a stand on so many fronts is simply not known. But we will try."
