Homeworld: Cataclysm
Warrior speaks with Chris Stewart, Designer at Barking Dog Studios, about Homeworld: Cataclysm
By - John "Warrior" Keefer

GameSpy: Did you have to modify the editor Relic used for Homeworld? If so, will any modifications to the editor be made available to the fans?

Chris Stewart: No modifications were made to Relic's mission editor, but we did make game code changes that make it easier to create maps for multiplayer games. You now only need to create one map for an 8 player map instead of having to create 7 different maps as before. We also added randomization to player's start positions so that custom maps could not favor a certain player.

GameSpy: How do you think Cataclysm goes beyond the original Homeworld? What aspect of the game are you most proud of?

Chris Stewart: There are many things that I am proud of in Cataclysm. My personal favorite is the variety we've added to multiplayer games. Not only are the two fleets you can play with quite different with many special abilities, but the addition of slipgates, meteor belts, crystals, and mines make the multiplayer experience in Cataclysm very diverse.

GameSpy: Are there any issues you have come across in beta testing after going gold that fans should be aware of? Any plans at this point for a patch or update?

Chris Stewart: We are very happy that no major problems have been encountered yet. We are aware of a few technical issues that will be addressed in a patch. However, we will be waiting a bit so that we can address any other issues that might arise in the coming weeks.

GameSpy: What's next for Barking Dog? Another strategy game perhaps? RPG? Action?

Chris Stewart: We're a strong strategy team with strong ideas about what we'd like to do next. We could tell you all about it, but that would spoil the surprise.
