Da Gameplay:

Homeworld Cataclysm comes with many changes to the game; probably the most revolutionary and intuitive addition is the time compression. The time compression feature allows you to speed the rate at which time passes to aid resource gathering, ship construction and shorten distance traveling. Resource gathering has never been so speedy, and time compression is a real gift when a mission requires lengthy resource gathering to advance the events. The time compression is wonderful mainly because it makes mundane periods of waiting fly by in seconds.

In some areas of control there is still room for improvement. The Cataclysm tutorial is excellent, allowing both new and veteran players to become accustomed to the new features of Cataclysm. One of the more complicated tools to use is the movement function, and it takes a while to master. Moving ships around is pretty simple, but camera angles, although self-controlled, often cause you to send your ships in the wrong directions. Another problem isthe repair ability in the workers. Unlike many other functions that can be performed on multiple objects such as attacking or escorting, repairing units requires you to select each worker, or workers, and tell them to heal one unit at a time.

One of the biggest disappointments in Cataclysm was the new SU's or support units, which dictate how many ships you may deploy. In Homeworld the issue was getting the RU's or resource units for the ships, but now you have almost unlimited amounts of RUs to be harvested throughout the game. Constantly you are restricted about the size of your fleet to the point where you can't effectively launch attacks and have that priceless moment of satisfaction when your huge fleet tramples the computer's armada. In multiplayer the SU's act more as an equalizer to stop players from massing huge fleets, and in that respect it does succeed.

Although you are limited to playing Kiith Somtaaw for the campaign portion of Cataclysm you can play as either the Beast or Kiith Somtaaw. Just from mere observation the play is moderately unbalanced in favor of Somtaaw. The limitations of fleet sizes do help a Beast player to survive much longer, but drawn out matches usually end in a Somtaaw victory. This is mainly because of the siege cannon, which can allow a Somtaaw player to hunt both Beast and Somtaaw alike. However the most impressive thing about Cataclysm online is the lag, or lack thereof, suffice to say, that even the router servers are quick. Like Blizzard's Battle.net, Cataclysm's multiplayer is nicely integrated into the game, sidestepping annoying browser launches.
