Da Introduction:

One and a half decades after the epic journey of the Hiigaran mothership, on it's way to seek out the once great Hiigaran Homeworld, the sleepers awoke to find a very different universe than the one they remember. Despite the glory of the mothership, it now sits in orbit around Hiigara serving as a shipyard for larger ships in the Hiigaran fleet. You are placed in command of one such ship, the Kuun-Lan, which is no more than a mining ship in service of the Kiith Somtaaw. Upon discovering an alien pod your ship unknowingly releases a life form, known as the Beast, upon the galaxy. The Beast is a life form that can infect both organic materials and machines, adding them to the collective. Sound familiar? Like many collective enemies, the beast spreads like wildfire throughout populated space absorbing both enemies and allies of the Hiigarans.

Da Graphics:

Like the original Homeworld, Cataclysm is a very cinematic game. One look at the graphics confirms this, and it has been this way since the first Homeworld was released. As a result the graphics have survived the jump to Cataclysm without any changes. That does not mean that the engine shows many signs of its age, but because of this there really isn't anything new to report about the Homeworld graphics engine.

Although they aren't quite as breathtaking as the in-engine cinematics, the cutscenes are quite interesting. They are all in black and white, and all cartoon drawn but still fairly appealing and interesting to watch.

Da Sound:

The sound effects in Cataclysm are pretty pedestrian for a fairly anticipated game. The unit activation sounds are all there, each with a different sounding voiceover. The voiceovers are pretty good, but sometimes the voice of the tactical officer can grate your nerves in tough missions. The music again is lacking flare but gets the job done. The use of ambient sounds that fade as you zoom out or pan around is, however, fairly well done.
