A while back we gave our visitors a chance to ask some questions for the developers of Homeworld: Cataclysm. Well, we received the answers, along with a few awesome exclusive screenshots for you. So here they are!

Question: How are waypoints used? And can they be saved so I can attack from several directions at the same time?

Waypoints are set similar to using the movement manager, only when you click on a position, the point is marked and the waypoint manager stays open so you can add new points. You can set how you want ships to follow a waypoint path. You can send them from one end to the other, you can send them to the end and return, or have them move to the final point and them return directly back to the first point, creating a loop. Combined with various ship settings, waypoints are extremely useful. Waypoint patterns can’t be saved however.

Question: Are you going to introduce any new races possibly from The High Council from the first game?

The only new race we introduce is The Beast..

Question: Will linked ships be able to unlink again?

Yes. Linkable ships can only use certain features depending on whether they’re linked or not. A good example is that Acolytes can be upgraded with missiles, but when linked to form an ACV, they can no longer fire those missiles. As ACVs though, they can use their EMP upgrade, which is something an Acolyte can’t do. Players will have to decide what special actions they want to have at ready before deciding to link ships together.

Question: Can you only build one super capital ship at a time (because of the external building)? As an example: building a carrier AND a dreadnought at the same time.

You can only build one super capital ship at a time. If you order more than one built, then the external construction will take place in the order in which you placed the build order.

Question: Homeworld promised to implement a 'Reverse-Engineer' feature, which had not occurred. In HW:C, will Reverse-Engineering be available?

Yes, and in fact reverse engineering is a huge part of the Beast fleet! The Beast can capture ships, reverse engineer them, and then apply any captured technologies to applicable ships in their fleet.

Question: How will the interface be different in Cataclysm?

Overall the interface in Cataclysm will be familiar to Homeworld players, but we’ve made some changes. The right click menu is easier to access now (if you have a ship selected you don’t have to right click on it to access its controls), and a lot more robust. Every aspect of the game, from special ship functions to accessing different manager screens (like Sensors or Research) can be accessed through the right click menu. We’ve added some new features to the HUD, such as build and research timers and a selected ships list. We also added ship info overlays, which tell you everything about a particular ship, like its health, what upgrade it has, what experience it’s acquired.
