A while back we gave our visitors a chance to ask some questions for the developers of Homeworld: Cataclysm. Well, we received the answers, along with a few awesome exclusive screenshots for you. So here they are!

Question: After Cataclysm is released, will there be another Homeworld game forthcoming? And if so, what are your plans for said game?

There’s always the possibility of there being another Homeworld game, but that would be up to Relic and Sierra. We haven’t announced anything at this time.

Question: You guys mention slipgates.. and then natural, I heard something about building you own. Will we be able to?

No, slipgates cannot be artificially created by the player. Slipgates are placed in certain levels by designers as a sort of terrain. Players to freely use these slipgates, though moving through them is easily spotted by opponents. Players can still hyperspace around the multiplayer maps for an RU cost, as in Homeworld.

Question: How many linking ships are there and will it be possible to link more than two ships together?

There are two types of linking ships - Acolytes and Mimics - which pair up into ACVs and MCVs. They only link in pairs. You could also count the Leech, though it “latches” more than it “links”. Still, very cool and very sneaky.

Question: According to the official website, it seems like that we would be able to replace traditional strike craft armor with energy shielding system... Does this means that we can upgrade armor into energy shielding? (Not the Sentinel type)

You can upgrade the armor on your fleet ships and a particular level of armor upgrade is designed to reduce the damage caused by energy weapons, but there is no energy shielding other than Sentinel shielding.

Question: It is said that the Beast will take on resource management in a whole new way, and even until now we have never seen a Beast resource collector yet, how does the Beast take on resource collecting?

Resource management in the broad sense, not just collecting rocks. The Beast does take a whole new approach to resource management in that ships don’t have to be built, rather they can be infected. Unlike salvaging, where you can use your workers to commandeer an enemy ship, an infected ship can be taken over in the field and immediately be sent into battle, without having to return to a command ship. Beast players also have the option of retiring captured ships and reverse engineering their technology. As for harvesting resources, the Beast has basic level access to subverted Somtaaw workers to harvest resources.
