Homeworld: Cataclysm Review
Paul "Guile" Mistretta
Oct 02, 2000

Graphics: A
Like I said earlier at 1280x1024 this baby is sweet arse and with support for software rendering, OpenGL, and Direct3D its even better. You can even pump this sucker up to 1600x1200. Just like pretty much all the other new games these days this thing gets the resolution way up there and give the ability to choose 16 or 32 bit color. Once again you have to love the big customization available to you.
Gameplay: A
It the same as pretty much all RTS games and of course I am a big time RTS fan and this is just what I needed to fill my needs. It’s easy to learn and once you get used to fighting in three dimensions (since it is space combat after all) you are set. But beware its highly addicting…
Sounds: A
I didn’t mention this at all before but the sound really fit in great with the environment. The background music was nice and solid, and with a considerable amount RTS games coming out with crappy sound tracks it was a definite relief not to feel that urge to turn off the music.
Performance: A
At 1280x1024 and 32-bit color this baby ran smooth as hell and I liked it too. There weren’t any annoying bugs that bothered me and it didn’t crash except that once. But that was a fluke I tell you… a fluke!
Originality: A
It’s a sequel and there have been plenty of RTS games before. But this game IMHO raises the RTS genre to a new level. It goes above and beyond any of the recently released RTS games of late. Like I keep mentioning over and over, I love the three-dimensional fighting it adds a whole new level of playing with things going on on all the different levels around you – this really hasn’t been done much before.
