Homeworld: Cataclysm Review
Paul "Guile" Mistretta
Oct 02, 2000

Aren't Spaceships cool though?
As for The Beast’s ships they really at the basics aren’t much different since of course The Beast is made up of a collection of Somtaaw ships, Taiidani Imperial vessels, and Turanic pirate ships. The infected ships lose some maneuver ability but gain extra armor from the organic coating it gets. One interesting feature The Beast has is the ability to sacrifice some like in order to speed up building ships or infection weapon charging.

In Multiplayer this bad boy game struts is stuff big just like its predecessor. Get some friends up in there and you could easily have the time of your life. I remember back when I first got Red Alert I’d stay up late and wake up early to play online over Westwood chat sometimes just skipping sleep all together. There really hasn’t been a RTS game to date that has enthralled me that much but yet once I loaded up Homeworld Cataclysm I was hooked. Multiplayer allows you to tweak some many different aspects of the game there is literally a never-ending replay ability. This game needs to be shipped with an addiction notice on it.

All those pretty graphics and it runs well too
As for the performance this game basically rocks. At 1280x1024 this baby is sweet arse and with support for software rendering, OpenGL, and Direct3D its even better. On my 800mhz, 128mb of RAM, and GeForce 2 GTS this baby didn’t have any trouble looking amazing as hell. However this one time when I tried to load the game and all hell broke loose. It didn’t load all the way before crashing and caused my desktop to go to a hella-low resolution. Luckily I was able to fix that up. When this occurred I was running v1.00 (not the newest) of the game, however I am convinced that this was just a fluke since it never did it again. Other then that this baby comes in clean.

Over all this puppy is an amazing. It’s simple and easy to learn for beginners and for Homeworld veterans. The tutorial that they have in the game quickly teaches you the basics you need to know to jump in and do some OWNING. At first the three dimensional environment takes a little getting used to but once you get into it you will probably get hooked -- I love that feeling of things going on at all different levels and plains. Another great thing in the game is the computer’s AI. It is magnificently done and the game provides for multiple levels of adjustment. In multiplayer you can even set up the computers aggressiveness level. So for example if you are one who likes to sit back and build up a big army you can p1mp the level at passive and go around untouched until you decide to attack. Customization is good and gets to that extra special place in my heart… In the end this big daddy has a good single player and a great multiplayer and endless hours of replayability, I probably won’t take this thing off my drive for a long, long time.
