Homeworld: Cataclysm Review
Paul "Guile" Mistretta
Oct 02, 2000

Single Player
Unfortunately in single-player mode only allows you to play as the Somtaaw. This is a little bit of a downfall but yet with 17 Somtaaw missions this game is certainly not lacking in the length market. However you can play as The Beast in multiplayer and skirmish mode if you have that dieing desire to infect and take over other things.

The ships you can use in Cataclysm are all brand new, though some of the old ones make appearances. First and most important of course is the Kuun-Lan, a giant mining ship that is the heart of your fleet. This bad boy does a lot. It of course has the ability to create and upgrade ships, but it can also upgrade itself by building expansion modules that attach to the side of the ship itself. Those modules allow you to research one of the five research sections. For instance the armor module allows you to research armor upgrades – makes sense eh? There is also a siege cannon and various other weapon upgrades for the Kuun-Lan that easily turn it from a big arse target/mining ship into a big arse target/powerhouse.

Hope you have been reading
Like I mentioned before the Kuun-Lan has the ability to create and upgrade several classes of ships. I don’t want to really get into a technically lay out of every ship so I will just hit on the few things. First let’s talk about the non-combat class. Just like in the first Homeworld and in any other RTS game you have to mine materials in order to have enough raw materials to build your ships and all the other good stuff you need to do. This is where the worker ship comes in handy. It goes out and mines the material and brings it back to the Kuun-Lan but one cool thing is you can build a processor ship that can head off with the worker ships and the worker ships can just dump off the materials to it and it will be processed –hence the name. Next there is the combat class, which comes complete with plenty of cool features. For instances the small attack class ships have the ability to link together to create larger, more powerful ships. There is one attack ship called the Mimic, which is pretty cool because it does just what its name suggests. Using holographic projector it can make itself look like other objects such as an enemy ship or a floating by asteroid. Its weapon is a kamikaze attack which is awesome… of course every time I use it I have this strange habit of yelling “KAMIKAZE HA!!” -- but that’s the DBZ fan in me (yes I know that’s not what Goku says). Other cool ships are the Ramming Frigate, and the Multi-beam Frigate.
