What I do
This is the first of the tricky missions. The first thing to know is that in the 2 pictures below, the top view one has the trigger points circled and labeled as B. If your collectors go beyond the points marked B the enemy fleet will start to attack you. You really want to avoid this so it is best to harvest one arm up to point B then move to the other arm. Just in case you don't see it, there is a gap between the 2 arms that the circles at point B are around. You have to zoom in a little closer for them to be clear but they are there, use them as your guide.
The attacking fleet is tailored to the fleet of ships you have, if you have decided to purchase Ion cannon technology from the Bentusi then the attack force will have 2 groups of ICFs in the attack along with 2 AF groups, 2 destroyers, and a carrier, if like me, you choose to wait until the tech comes of it's own time, you will have one group of ICFs and 2 groups of AFs as well as the other ships listed above. The fleet will also have varying amounts of defenders and interceptors.
I will resource along the 2 veins until I have reached both of the points marked b. I then tell the collectors and controller to come back to the MS where they will be safe.
I build one probe for the 'scan' and make sure I have the following fleet: at least 20 attack bombers, 16 heavy corvettes, 6-8 support frigates, and no less than 10 salvettes. I leave all but 4 of the salvettes docked in the MS to protect them, I retire any repair corvettes I have for the RUs and then send the probe to the asteroid field.
When I trigger the attack I will get the secondary objective of destroying the enemy resource collectors. I send out the 4 salvettes to go collect these ships and make them my own, I make sure to send along 2-4 support frigates to keep the salvettes healthy. The enemy does not like me stealing their ships, hehehe. I also send the 16 heavies to accompany the salvettes so the defenders and inties die real good when trying to protect the collectors. Those heavies have the remainder of the support frigates set to repair them so they stay health.
Since I choose to not buy the Ion tech, I have one group of 4 ICFs bearing down on my MS along with 2 sets of 4 AFs. I wait until the collectors are safely mine then send ALL my salvage corvettes after those ships. Keeping in mind to support them as they do their job. I'll set the bombers and heavies to attacking all the enemy ships so they have a hard time singling out my salvettes.
By the time I have salvaged half the ships I will have 2 destroyers and a carrier heading to my MS. I will try my damnedest to make sure I get both destroyers and the carrier. I intend to retire the whole fleet for the resources, see I like the resources more than the extra ships, hehehe.
By the end of this mission I will have 16 heavies, 20 ABs, 4 collectors, 1 controller, and one research ship. All the ships I need for mission 6 success, believe it or not.
