Each mission in the list to the right consists of 6 things, a picture of the load screen for the mission, a listing of the objectives given through out the mission with further information on those objectives, a list of research items opened during the mission, a list of ships newly available in the mission, a picture of the mission playing field in the sensors manager with points of interest marked off, and a section detailing what I do for this mission (totally objective).
