What is the difference between Vanilla Homeworld and Homeworld: Game of the Year?
Vanilla Homeworld (the original Homeworld box) is simply that: the original Homeworld game. Homeworld:GOTY is the Game of the Year edition of Homeworld. It includes a few extra goodies, including the Homeworld soundtrack on CD.
What is this Raider's Retreat mission I keep hearing about?
The Raider's Retreat mission is a single player mission that actually got 'axed' from the game (it didn't make the final cut.) But due to pressure from the Homeworld community, it was released to the general public.
Where can I find Raider's Retreat?
Raider's Retreat can be found on any of the major Homeworld or Relic community sites. Simply go to their files sections. If you still can't seem to find the download, we suggest you ask around the Homeworld community; someone is surely bound to help you.
What is the name of the Homeworld 'theme' song, the one with the chorus?
The song you are probably referring to, and the one we actually get asked the most about, is Samuel Barber's "Angus Dei."
Who composed the music for Homeworld?
Homeworld's music, with the exception of Angus Dei, was written and composed by Paul Ruskay.

Yes, there were three patches in total released for Homeworld. Each one addressed different issues.

How many races are there in total?
There are five races in total. And they are, in no particular order: The Kushan, The Taiidan, the Turanic Raiders, the Kadeshi and the Bentusi.
How many races are actually playable?
Two of the five races are actually playable: the Kushan and the Taiidan.
How do the two races differ?
The two races differ in a few ways. First, the ships look quite different. So a Taiidani scout would never be mistaken for a Kushan scout. Second, each race has a few ships that are unique to their side. And finally, the ship stats are slightly different for each race.
I've heard that the single player campaign is the same for both races. Is this true?
Yes, this is true. No matter what side you play you still get the same missions and proceed through the game the same way. The difference is, of course, that if you play as the Kushan, the enemy race are the Taiidani. If you play as the Taiidani, the enemy race are the Kushan.
How many hours will it take me to go through the single player game?
That all depends on how good a player you are. Some people have been able to get through the game in around 20 hours. Others have taken a lot more time. On average we would say you would get 30-40 hours of gameplay within the game.
What kind of resource system does Homeworld use?
Homeworld uses RUs as a resource. RUs are Resource Units that can be collected either from Asteroids that you will find in space or from gas clouds.
What is the Guidestone?
The Guidestone is an ancient artifact found in the ruins of Khar-Toba. It has a galactic map engraved on it that leads to 'Hiigara' or 'home.' It is also the artifact that is responsible for putting you on the journey 'home.' For more information on the Guidestone, be sure to check out the Story section of this site.
The interface looks complicated; should I worry?
No, while the interface may seem to be complicated, as a matter of fact it is quite easy to learn. It will, however, take some time to master, but by the end of the single player storyline you should be comfortable enough with it that if you want to go and kick somebody's ass in multiplayer, you should have no problems.
Can I move the Mothership?
Yes and no. The Mothership can be moved in a multiplayer or skirmish game; however, it remains stationary in the single player game.
How do you research?
Research is accomplished by building a number of Research vessels (up to seven.) You then choose what you want to research and proceed from there.
How much does the research cost?
Research costs nothing other then the initial resource units that you have to put out for the research vessels.
Can I make my own custom game types?
It depends what you mean by custom game types. You can adjust the settings, beginning resources and pre-determined conditions for winning a multiplayer game, but you cannot create custom scripted games (ala Quake CTF.)

Multiplayer Questions
How many people can play in a multiplayer game?
Up to eight people can play in a multiplayer game.
During multiplayer can I ally with another player?
Yes, in Homeworld multiplayer, like almost in any other RTS game that supports multiplayer, you can ally with one of your friends. That way you can duke it out with someone else, in a 2vs2, 3vs3 or even a 4vs4 game.
Can I play a multiplayer game as one of the races that I encounter during the game?
No, these races are unplayable through normal means. However, there are a few mods in the Homeworld community that 'open up' the other Homeworld races. If you download and install such mods, you would be able to play as one of the other races. Please note, however, that if you do download and install such a mod, for your multiplayer game to work properly every one of your opponents must have the same version of the mod installed.
I keep hearing about the scout rush. What is it?
The scout rush is a 'basic' strategy that a lot of Homeworld players use to overwhelm their opponents. Basically what it means is building lots of scouts at the beginning and trying to get an advantage on your enemy right from the start.
How many multiplayer 'game types' are included in Homeworld?
There are a few multiplayer game types included in Homeworld: Carpe Diem, Carrier only, and bounty.

Do I need a 3-D accelerator card to run the game?
No, Homeworld does come with a built-in software-rendering engine. However, it is recommended that you get a 3-D accelerator card. The game will run smoother and it will look a lot prettier.
What 3-D video cards does Homeworld support?
A 12MB+ accelerator card is recommended. Chances are that if you have one of the newer 3-D accelerator cards you don't have to worry about compatibility or performance issues.
Does Homeworld support audio API such as EAX and A3D?
No, Homeworld has its own custom build sound engine that does everything it needs to do.
Can I mod Homeworld?
Yes, Homeworld is modable, to a certain degree.
How easy is it to mod Homeworld?
The answer to this question would really depend on what you mean by 'easy' and what your current skill set is. If you've never modded a game, chances are Homeworld isn't a good place to start. However, if you're an experienced modder you should be able to get into the Homeworld modding groove.
If I want to mod Homeworld, how do I get started?
Your best bet would be to check out the Homeworld tools section, or one of the many modding fansites and go from there. Good luck!
