What is Homeworld: Cataclysm?
Cataclysm is a stand-alone product that is built on the Homeworld engine. It includes many new features, many new ships, and an all-new plot.
So, is Homeworld: Cataclysm Homeworld 2? Does it continue the Homeworld storyline?
No, Homeworld: Cataclysm is not Homeworld 2. And neither does it really continue the Homeworld storyline. In essence, Homeworld:Cataclysm is a side story to the main Homeworld storyline. You could say that it's Homeworld 1.5. It does, however, occur after the Homeworld story.
Where can I get the most up-to-date information on Homeworld: Cataclysm?
Since most of the Homeworld community is also into Homeworld: Cataclysm you will find the most up-to-date information on HW:C on the Homeworld community sites. You can check out the HW:C community section on this website for some links to some popular news sites.
Will I be able to play the game on my computer?
If you want to know if your system is up to par, simply check the system requirements section on the description page. If your system specs are below the minimum system requirements, chances are that you won't be able to run the game. But if somehow you do manage to get it running with a below spec system, then the game will, no doubt, be unbearably slow.
Help! I'm having problems with the game. What should I do?
You can follow this link which will take you to our support page where you'll be provided with all the information that you need to solve your problem.
Who composed the music for Homeworld: Cataclysm; was it the same guy who did Homeworld's music?
Yes, Paul Ruskay, the musician behind Homeworld, created a totally original soundtrack for Cataclysm alongside fellow Studio X composer, Greg Sabitz. The music in Cataclysm has a much darker feel than Homeworld to suit the tone of the game.

Storyline and Gameplay
When does Homeworld: Cataclysm take place?
HW:C takes place fifteen years after the events in the original Homeworld game. The remnants of the Imperialist Taiidani and their Turanic Raider allies have been growing in strength and harrying the Hiigarans, but a far greater, universal threat is about to emerge.
What races will return from the original Homeworld?
Taiidani Imperialists, Turanic Raiders, and the Bentusi Traders all have a role in Cataclysm.
During the game who do I play?
In the single-player campaign, you play Kiith Somtaaw, a Hiigaran mining faction that lost most of its members and political influence when Kharak was destroyed in the Great Burning.
What ships do the Somtaaw have?
The Somtaaw have many new ships, including ships that can mimic other ships using a holo-projection system, and the new Leech drone ships that clamp onto enemy vessels, exposing them to your radar, breaching their plasma systems or dismantling them for parts.
Who are the "squishy guys?"
The squishy guys are also known as "The Beast." You'll have to ask around the Homeworld community to get the full story on why they're called this.
How does the gameplay differ in Homeworld: Cataclysm?
Homeworld: Cataclysm introduces several new features, including fog of war, a time acceleration feature, a waypoint system, hyperspace slipgates, and an array of new ship technologies like the infection beam of the Beast entity. Fog of war will limit visibility to the sensor range of your ships, but with waypoints you can easily set up patrol routes. Hyperspace teleportation points called slipgates allow you to jump units between fixed locations without the normal Resource Unit expenditure of traveling through hyperspace. The infection beam allows the Beast to assimilate technologies unavailable to it at the start of play.
How does the variable time-acceleration feature work?
With time acceleration, time can be made to elapse at up to eight times the normal rate, speeding up tasks such as resource gathering. Time acceleration is available only in single-player and skirmish modes.
I've heard talk of support units in Homeworld: Cataclysm. What are they?
Support units determine how large your fleet can be. Different ships use up different amounts of support units, and once all your support units are depleted you won't be able to build any more ships.
Can I increase the amount of support units available to me? If so, how?
Yes, you can increase the amount of support units that are available to you. By building either a carrier, or adding support modules to your mothership, the amount of support units you have available to you increases.
What happens if I capture a ship and I don't have enough resource units to maintain it?
If you capture and you don't have enough resource units to maintain it, the ship will be destroyed.
Does the amount of support units ever 'cap out?'
Yes, the amount of support units caps out at around 430, give or take a few units. That's a lot of ships!
What are the pink crystals that I've seen in some of the screenshots?
Crystals are a new collectible resource unique to Cataclysm. Crystals are much more dense than asteroids or dust, and yield more resource units. They are also more difficult to harvest as they require several worker upgrades and are highly volatile. Extreme care must be taken when working around crystals as the explosion they cause, when destroyed, is powerful enough to cripple any fleet nearby.
What new ship technologies and research trees will be available?
There are 18 new ships and 25 new technologies. Most of the ships are detailed on this site, while the new technologies and the remaining ships are detailed in the game manual.
How do unit upgrades work?
When you select a ship that can be upgraded, it will display a solid yellow circle to the right of its health bar. Simply hit 'U' to upgrade. Strike craft will dock to upgrade. Larger ships are able to upgrade themselves without docking, but during the upgrade they are vulnerable as they must remain stationary and defenseless while the upgrade is being performed.
What happens to my ships once they become assimilated by the Beast?
The Beast can retire them, and thereby acquire their building technology.
Can all Somtaaw ship be assimilatd?
No there are certain ships, such as the Dreadnaught and the Destroyer, that can't be assimilated by the Beast. The infection beam will, however, damage these ships.
What can the Leeches do?
When instructed to leech, a Leech ship will clamp onto a target's hull. Once there, it can spy, vent, or leech. Spying allows the owner of the Leech to follow the host's movement. When 'venting,' the Leech slowly eats through the hull of the host ship until the host is destroyed. Leeching will slowly damage the host as the Leech gathers material from the host's hull; the Leech then returns the stolen material to the command vessel or nearest processor or carrier to convert it into RUs.
When in spy mode, Leeches rely on being invisible in sensor manager to cling to large ships without being seen. They provide you with a window into the activities of the enemy. Leeches are also great for targeting the Siege Cannon. To aim the cannon you need to see your target, but Recons tend to get noticed and destroyed, so a Leech is a spotter that isn't easy to find and destroy.
What is a slipgate?
Slipgates are fixed points, spaced far apart, that ships can instantly teleport between. Slipgates can not be artificially created by the player. Slipgates are placed in certain levels by designers and mappers as a part of the terrain. Players can freely use slipgates, though opponents can easily see that vessels are moving through them. Players can still hyperspace around the multiplayer maps for an RU cost, as in Homeworld.
Can any ship use a sliggate?
No, not every ship can use a slipgate. There are actually slipgate sizes, and certain ships, such as the mothership, are unable to fit into the smaller slipgates.
Can there be more than one slipgate in a level?
Yes, there can be multiple slipgates in a level.
What changes have been made to the classic Homeworld interface for Homeworld: Cataclysm?
In Cataclysm, you are able to issue commands via the sensors manager, set waypoints, and issue different attack modes for capital ships. The displayed sensors range is more accurate, the right-click interface has been updated, and the key-binding system is more flexible.
How do the composite vehicles work?
The composite vehicles (Mimics and Acolytes) don't become 'superships.' When the proper tech has been researched, they can link up. This will have its pros (ACVs can use EMP special ability; Acolytes can't) and its cons (ACVs aren't as fast as Acolytes). They won't be invulnerable or anything like that. And yes, they can separate again.
How does fog of war work?
Each ship has a sensor area, with two ships --the Recon and Sentinel-- having a greater range than the rest of the fleet. There is a technology to upgrade: for example, a Recon's sensor range that not only increases the range at which it can see, but also allows it to better spot covert ships like the Mimic, Leech, and Cloaked Fighter.
How many super capital ships can you build at a time?
You can only build one super capital ship at a time. Super capital ships, by the way, are built outside the command ship. If you order more than one built, then the construction will take place in the order in which you placed the build order.

Multiplayer
What new features are introduced in Multiplayer?
In multiplayer mode, it will be possible to use Taiidani, Kushan, Turanic Raider, and Somtaaw ships simultaneously while playing as the Beast. The introduction of slipgates and meteor storms offer new twists.
Does Cataclysm support a Random Map Generator?
The Homeworld engine will not support a random map system, so Cataclysm doesn't have a random map generator either, but it does have random start points in multiplayer missions, which makes it impractical to create maps weighted in favor of the game host.
How many Races are playable in Multiplayer?
Two - the Beast and Kiith Somtaaw. As in Homeworld, the other races, such as the Bentusi and the Turanic Raiders, aren't playable.

No, Homeworld: Cataclysm uses the original Homeworld engine -- granted it's slightly modified, but the core of the engine is still the same.
What new effects have been added to the Homeworld engine?
Homeworld: Cataclysm features shockwave explosions, holographic projection effects, polygonal accurate collisions, shielding effects, new ship repairing effects, lens flares, and dynamic Gouraud shading.
Do ships appear damaged when hit, beyond venting flames?
Cataclysm doesn't have a damage decal system, but it uses a dynamic Gouraud shading system to indicate hull damage. The hull will darken when hit with weapons fire.
