This map greatly increases the strategic depth of multiplayer Homeworld. It's big enough that decisons about fleet movements are really crucial (but not too big to be annoying). Games don't become meet in the middle for 1 decisive battle. Instead, there is room for many battles as players try to gain the upper hand in resources and position. Unlike most games, it's possible to lose many battles and still win the game (I have).

Also, there are a lot of resources, but not so many that they aren't quite valuable. It is crucial to capture and hold key resources areas -- but this is tricky because the map's size (and lack of hyperspace) may make you pay the price for spreading your forces too thin. Bottom line: lots of room for deep, multi-layered strategy.
