What we've got here is one of those maps that make you utter an unintelligable "oooh"-type sound when it first loads. "Pirates in the Mist" opens up in a moderately large, rectanglish-shaped sector of space, with a eye-burning nova background on one end and a distant sparkling city-planet on the other. In between is the massive, thin "mists" of a nebula, with some specklings of asteroid dust liberally thrown in for good measure. Then, of course, there is the... surprise waiting for you in near the center of the map - for not only the Kushan and Taiidan have interests in this area of space...

Graphically, this level excels. The background is absolutely awe-inspiring, and will be sure to spawn a massive load of copies. The map itself is well done as well, with plenty of room to stretch and expand before you head out war-bent on your opponents. Homeworld's awesome 3-D environment is fairly well utilized here, with most objects placed above or below the X-Y plane, making knowledge of the SHIFT key a great asset to the player.

However, there are a few flaws in this map. The "nebula" concept makes efficient harvesting an almost impossible goal, and the surprise is somewhat overdone. This causes the gameplay to get a bit more hairy when your harvestersgoof up and can totally wreck your game if you find yourself under attack by... you'll find out. This map can also become somewhat stale after a while.

In all, this map is an ideal map for intermediate players. Gameplay is not extremely fast-paced due to the distances and other obsticles involved, but is perfectly suited for players who have grasped the basic controls of the game but are still developing them. I highly recommend "Pirates" as a fun-filled, challenging map.
