"Broken Helix" is, simply put, fun. Really, really fun. This is a map
whose author went for gameplay and layout instead of playing around with
pretty graphics or fancy scripting, and came up with a creation that is
enjoyable and able to be played infinite times without becoming repetitious.
It's built around a double helix (looks like a DNA strand) of asteroids
and other debris chock-full of RUs that spirals down from two start
locations on the same plane. I know that sounds high-brow, but it's the
best description I can get off in one sentence. Off in the background is
the only noticeable attempt at scenery, the "Garden of Kadesh" from the
single player missions; however, this is no detractor, as the thing is so
huge that anything more would look ridiculous. Plain and simple; there's no
need for anything more.
There are a lot of pluses about this map; first, and most noticeable in the
Sensors Manager, is the amount the Z-Axis is used. Although the players
both start at the top of the helix (where the strands originate opposite
each other), effective resource gathering (a.k.a., key to victory) is
ultilizing the vertical layers of minerals. By the time a game gets into
full gear, fleets are stretched all the way to the opposite ends of the
asteroids in desperate defenses against attacks from every possible angle.
The flaws are few, and most are subject to the opinion of the player.
Homeworld was made to look beautiful, and in that respect, this map doesn't
cut it. Also, the short distances between start locations favor cowardly
means of attack such as an indefinite Plasma Bomb rush against Resource and
Research (R&R;) units; it's virtually impossible to run out of fuel. Also,
it's made with advanced players in mind; sound knowledge of all controls and
experience win this one.
Any advanced player seeking a fun-filled battlefield will love this map.
This is definitely one to add to your map library.
