How to get OpenGL in HW:C under Windows 98
1) Where is the trouble
Barking Dog has desactived OpenGL capabilities for some graphics card even if they have
an openGL drivers like Matrox G400.
For some HW:C's users the Video options will look like that
rather than
2) How to get OpenGL
All graphics cards capabilities for HW:C are resume in the 'Devstats.dat'. This file can
be found in the /sierra/cataclysm folder and edit with Wordpad.
Before editing this file you must save it !
'Devstats.dat' is a text file. If you edit it, you should have that on your screen.
1) load the file with wordpad.
2) Move the cursor to the line that correspond to your graphic card. For me it was the G400 which
is circle by a blue line.
3) Move the cursor to the columns where a red ' * ' is (look on the picture, there are two) ).
4) Change the ' * ' character by a ' . ' character.
5) Save the file
You should now have the OpenGL choice, but be carreful if Barking Dog deactived it.
It might be because it was unusable (too many bugs for example). I knew It would
run with MY matrox G400 because it was running under NT4. The OpenGL under NT4
and W98 are the same for Matrox graphic card.
The first '*' will active OpenGL under W98, the second '*', 32 bits capabilities.
If other games are working fine with your openGL driver, try to launch manually
the game. Go to 'start' then 'execute' and type :
- For HW:C : c:\sierra\cataclysm\cataclysm.exe /safeGL
In fact the '/safeGL' switch can be use for any graphic card to solve troubles with OpenGL.
3) Don't use HWVideoTweaker !
This program lets you change the 'Netstats.dat' parameter, but it is made only for HW not HW:C.
4) If something goes wrong
if HW:C no longer runs and you haven't saved the 'Netstats.dat' file, Simply delete
'netstats.dat', uninstall and re-install HW:C. You will not lose the games or the
screenshots you have saved either in single player or in multiplayer.
